Thesis Project

The purpose of this blog is to track my progress and thoughts on my engineering thesis in semester 2, 2007. Below is a shortened summary of my topic:

Topic: General Purpose Analytics for Health Information Systems

The current ED Information Systems are considered to be antiquated technology that needs to be redeveloped. They limitations in that they not interact with other information systems within the especially X-ray and pathology systems.

Project Objectives
This project aims to expand our research into ways of generating hospital information systems and to produce a working prototype of an ED system from a generic solution to generating application specific information systems.

Project Resources
Work in the last year’s program has a produced a systems analysis of the ED at Westmead hospital. Also there is a historical set of specifications for ED systems which will be made available from a group of doctors specializing in this area of medicine. A methodology has been created for generating ISs from a master system which has as its major functions
  • Incorporation of medical terminology systems
  • Real-time data capture of point of care information, e.g., text descriptions, bedside measurements (pulse, blood pressure, temperature, etc.)
  • Interaction with other information systems for data requests and storage
  • Storage of a standardised electronic medical records, Retrieval of Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
The project needs to be developed further to solve the problem of general purpose analytics to satisfy the divergent roles of physician staff, that is, the roles of clinician, researcher, and administrator, all of which require different functionality from an information system.

Richard, in your project description you say you will be creating a new ED system. In fact you will be building on the work we have done over the last 2 years and you will be working on and ICU system
cheers
